The nonprofit organizations help to refute the common notion that people with disabilities can not participate in sports. They are actively training disabled people to develop skiing and snowboarding skills and compete in competitions.

For those who still believe that the loss of a limb makes someone unable to do sport, I recommend you see the film "Murder Ball", a rarely seen 2005 documentary about wheelchair rugby, where athletes missing one or more members give everything in full contact mode to win a championship. I guarantee that anyone after seeing this movie will have much more respect for the disabled among us.

Snowboarding is widely regarded as an "extreme sport". He gained mass exposure and popularity in the U.S. during the Winter Olympic Games 2002 held in Park City, Utah. Snowboarding can be a difficult sport to master, since it combines elements of surf, skate and skiing. But these days, we're finding more and more people with disabilities on the slopes snowboarders.

A good example of organizations that working with persons with disabilities to help them reach their full potential is the challenge of Alaska, who has worked with disabled athletes in Alaska for over twenty years. It is a nonprofit organization that offers opportunities for sports and therapeutic recreation for people with disabilities. This past winter, we worked with students with developmental disabilities of all ages, instructing more than a thousand lessons to teach the skills of skiing and snowboarding.

One type of snowboarding that is becoming increasingly popular for people with physical disabilities is Adaptive Snowboarding. Similar to the sport of rugby was mentioned above, adaptive snowboarding allows partially disabled athletes to participate in their sport. Although adaptive skiing has been around for a while, many people are beginning to take awareness of Adaptive Snowboarding.

The sport is relatively new, but manufacturers are beginning to develop snowboards and specialized equipment around sport. Account vary in how many adaptive riders in the country no one with a hard number, but everyone agrees that its popularity is growing rapidly. The short term objective is the adaptation time Snowboarding been included as an athletic competition at the Winter Paralympics, possibly as soon as the Winter Paralympic Games 2010 in Whistler.

An organization at the forefront of teaching the sport of Adaptive Snowboarding is not for U.S. profit Adaptive Recreation Center at Bear Mountain Ski Resort in California. They have a full team of recreational therapists on board to direct and supervise the training. Accepted people with disabilities of all kinds, including blindness, autism, spinal cord injuries, amputees members, partial paralysis, and many others. Adaptive Snowboarding training, consisting of one-on-one sessions, costs less than $ 100 per day which includes the cost of tickets and equipment.

Organizations like the Center adaptation Recreation and Challenge Alaska are true to the idea that we can do anything if we put our minds and our capabilities are more than our limitations physical. They have shown that snowboarding and other extreme sports can be enjoyed by people with a wide range of disabilities if they are simply given the confidence to try and the equipment and the opportunity to shine.
